Since opening its doors in April, The Old Butchers on Bedminster’s North Street has been a popular hangout for beer lovers. The collaboration with Wiper and True has brought a truly unique watering hole to the city, where punters can enjoy a selection of carefully crafted brews in the modern and beautifully restored butchers shop.
All that was missing was something going on in the kitchen. Well not anymore! Cue Carol and her crabs – she will be serving up the finest in flavours inspired by her travels throughout Vietnam and the Deep South; think soft shell crab, wings, crab cakes, pickled popcorn shrimp and gumbo. Now imagine all of that washed down with a pint of chilled beer = winner.
This international menu will focus mainly on cracking crab cooking but will also feature sharing trays and buckets, side dishes of triple cooked corn on the cob, prawn cocktail or sweetcorn chowder fries and deep fried pickled shitake mushrooms (lord have mercy).
Carol says: “Crab is in my DNA. I was brought up in the North East of England and every Saturday in the summer my father used to cycle 3 miles to Newbiggin-By-The-Sea to buy a stone of live crabs from the local fishermen. He’d bring the sack home and tip out the contents into the bath and together we used to clean and prepare the crabs.
“So when Ben contacted me to be part of his vision for North Street, I jumped at the chance. I love that we’ve worked together to create a menu of recipes from my travels with crab taking centre stage.”
As well as a brand new menu, every Thursday at The Old Butchers will see a weekly Seafood Boil – where you can come down and enjoy a big sharing hot pot of clams, mussels, smoked sausage, langoustines and vegetables. There will also be Carol’s monthly boil, whereupon a band will provide the entertainment – so keep an eye on social media for announcements.
The Crab Kitchen will officially open on 15 June and be serving Tuesday – Saturday. There will also be a brunch menu of crab or veggie grilled cheese toasties, popcorn shrimp or chicken sandwiches, and a selection of evening dishes.
Brunch will be served 12noon-3pm Tuesday-Saturday and then the evening menu 5pm-10pm Tuesday-Saturday.
